Here at metalcarportsandkits.com, we’ve made no secret of the fact that our number one choice is always going to be an aluminum carport. However, we’ve had lots of emails from people wanting to know more about steel carports and how they compare to the aluminum kind, so here’s a quick guide to steel carports with comparisons.
Steel is a lot heavier than aluminum (or, if you prefer, ‘aluminium’), so your carport is going to be a permanent fixture and not easy to transport or sell on – except in commercial circumstances. Aluminum is more than durable enough for most situations and almost all climates, and has the advantage of being more moveable. Having said that, steel carports do have plenty of advantages themselves. They are less likely to suffer from corrosion, and steel tube carports can be easier to construct than their aluminum counterparts.
Most carports are made from very high quality galvanized steel, are less likely to suffer from corrosion, and are much stronger and more long lasting than wooden (timber or lumber) carports. Despite the weight difference, steel carports are cheaper than most other types of metal carport, including aluminum. If you want a solid extra storage space in the form of a carport, you can save yourself a lot of money by opting for steel over aluminum.
Choosing between a steel or aluminum carport can be a tough job is money isn’t a factor for you. If you’re unsure whether to buy a steel carport or aluminum carport, your best bet is to compare the other aspects. For example, which carport is easier to build, which has a longer guarantee, which is more convenient to assemble, which design is preferable and so on.

Not to mention, aluminum is a soft metal prone to tearing. Galvanized steel will do better to protect your vehicle against act-of-God hail or debris, and it’ll come out of a storm looking a heck of a lot better than aluminum. Just a thought.

We use a steel kind of carport, it has lasted for quite a while now and having no problems with it whatsoever. Since I don’t move around much, it would be impractical for me to buy aluminum since it won’t be as durable and lasting as steel.

The reason why steel carports should be your number one option is because of the fact that steel, unlike many of the other materials that carports can be made of is one of the strongest and most durable materials out there.

Metal is becoming a more popular choice of material for carports as it provides many benefits over the traditional timber carport structure. The biggest benefits of metal as a material whether, steel or aluminium is metals long-term sustainability. Metal is much more robust to the elements and resistant to pests like termites.

And if you hit a steel carport with your car, you’ll be less likely to leave it permenantly damaged or incapacitated.
